The Virgin Mary kneels at the altar, having presented the Christ Child to the High Priest, Simeon. A handmaiden stands behind the Virgin, carrying three turtle doves in a basket, offered as sacrifice for the Purification of the Virgin, an event likely to have taken place at the same time.
