Manuscript notebook by Thomas Scattergood, with erratic pagination and index to cases at the front. Signature on the first page.
Contains patient case notes, presumably from cases observed at the Leeds General Infirmary whilst Scattergood was Assistant Apothecary. The cases record which surgeon was treating the patient, the symptoms and treatment provided, and when the patient was admitted. There are often notes in the margin detailing the surgeon’s name, case number, the patients' disease or condition, and if treatment was successful. The case date between 1846-1850 [pp.1-176].
p.176 contains a newspaper article by Scattergood reporting on a patient case in the Medical Times, 1850.
p.191 includes a patient case dated 1879, and there are further patient cases dated 1878-1885 between pp.209-260.
Between pp.200-209, the volume contains Scattergood’s notes on medico-legal cases he worked on, dating from 14 Sep 1857. Includes notes on two cases [one examining flour and one examining samples of Cape Wines], which also occur in MS 534/1.
Pages are blank between pp.260-447.
p.448 contains a handwritten copy of an article from the British Review, No. 36, pp.346-, entitled ‘Reason, or the difference between things contrary to reason, & things above reason’.
pp.450-451 contain a list entitled ‘Preparations and Specimens’; the rest of the volume is unused.
Loose papers found in the back pocket of the cover, mainly include letters to Scattergood from other doctors requesting to send patients to him, or for his opinion on their condition; also includes notes relating to patient cases by Scattergood and a page of sketches of urine cells viewed under a microscope [21 items].
