    Manuscript notebook, containing notes made by Berkeley Moynihan on a visit to the clinic of Ernst Gustav Benjamin von Bergmann (1836-1907) in Berlin, Germany.

    The notes relate to observations of particular surgical practice or medical techniques on patient cases treated by von Bergmann, and his assistant surgeon Friedrich Gustav von Bramann (1854-1913). Also contains notes from a lecture by a Dr Casper entitled in German ‘Cursus der krautheiteu harn und mannlichen geschlechts organe’ made in Berlin, on 3 March 1890. The lecture mainly relates to the treatment of various urologic diseases and gonorrhoea.

    The patient cases generally have titles, brief information about the patient, and then detailed notes on the treatment or operation conducted. Some have diagrams or sketches.

    Also includes notes on von Bergmann’s practice on ‘antiseptics’, observing his methods of cleaning and preparation of instruments before conducting operations.

    Text on fly-leaf page reads: ‘B.G.A. Moynihan Berlin February 9th. 1890 “Von Bergmann’s Clinic” Bramann. Bardeleben Casper.’ The pages are numbered in pencil; pp.54-118 are unused.
