[Side 1] Ralph recalls 'crow-minding' [= scaring birds from crops] as young farm worker, comments he regularly played truant, tells series of anecdotes about successive village schoolmasters, recalls one from Birmingham who was initially extremely strict but well-liked and established successful school football team, talks about market gardening, describes hard physical work and positive relationship with boss. [Side 2] John recalls volunteering with four friends for Boer War, granted ten days' notice following enrolment in Worcester to make arrangements for smallholding, comments liked South Africa but caught dysentery and enteric [= typhoid fever], briefly mentions escorting prisoners to Bloemfontein, describes conditions in South Africa incl. unhygienic water in Orange River.
