'bailie' [= bailiff, farm manager] who was renowned for whistling so farm workers always knew when he was en route to check their work, recalls large quantities of cider made and drunk locally in past, memories of Thornbury School incl. fight with classmate on way home, recalls winning bet (packet of cigarettes) for ploughing feat, briefly talks about hedging.
