[Side 1] William talks about demise of farm horses since advent of tractor, remembers blacksmith at Middleton-in-Teesdale renowned for making instant diagnoses of horses' ailments, mentions home remedy for canker, tells anecdotes about horses he developed special relationship with in past. [Side 2] William recalls large horse previously used in lead mines, describes incident one morning near Hamsterley, roping oak tree off road into river, horse went to eat on 'cam' [= bank] while William mended broken rope, returned to horse standing on cam to re-couple her, horse took single 'loup' [= jump] and slipped down cam fracturing William's leg, helped on to cart by waggoner, used knife and string as splint and sent for dcotor and nurse once home.
