"16. Sarton (Somme): a good billet." Painting includes legend: "Sarton 15/8/16. Stone, buried and wounded 21.8.16." On reverse: "16. A Somme billet: 1916. My room on left; batman's aloft. The man in the sketch was a week later buried with all the other Company batmen by a shell. Three were killed: this man was rescued alive but was seriously injured by a trenching tool while being dug out."
