Painting includes legend: "No.8 R.C.P. Sed-Ul-Bair, The Dardanelles, 28-12-15". On reverse: "8. The Dardenelles: The Narrows. From a sap on the Helles sector. The far hills of Asia Minor hid "Asiatic Annie", a Turkish 'heavy', which sent one over on to one of our beaches about every 15 minutes. Transport chaps played soccer on the ground in the middle distance, but being in view of the enemy and often under fire teams often left the pitch without previous consent of the ref. ----He often went first."
