(19) Original manuscript of Byron’s story 'Mazeppa' in Mary Shelley's hand, written in Venice in 1818, with corrections in Byron's hand and a frontispiece portrait of him (54 pp); bound with a French introduction to 'Mazeppa' in Mary Shelley's hand also written in Venice in 1818, headed 'Advertisement to Mazeppa' in Byron's hand and annotated by him (3 pp); and an uncut copy of the second issue of the first printed edition of 'Mazeppa: a poem' (London: John Murray, 1819). 1 red custom-made case containing 2 red portfolios and a volume finely bound in bright red morocco gilt-tooled on all outside covers with decorations and with the spine lettering ‘Maz-/ eppa/ Lord/ Byron/ MS.’ On the spine of the case there are gilt-embossed the words ‘Mazeppa/ Lord/ Byron’.
