  • Original object type: Artefact
  • Title: [Maḥazor minhag Roma le-khol ha-shanah]. [מחזור מנהג רומה לכל השנה]. [Liturgy for whole year according to the Italian rite, with appendix of poems].
  • Description:

Hebrew title supplied from cataloguer. Alternative Hebrew titles: [מחזור כמנהג בני רומא] ,[סדור מנהג רומה] .

Notes concerning the provided Hebrew and English titles: Contrary to Ashkenazic, and following it, part of the Sephardi custom, where 'Maḥzor' became a term to be used for a prayer book containing festival prayers only, in Italian-Jewish tradition, the terms Maḥzor and Siddur are used indiscriminately (see Ernst Daniel Goldschmidt, ‘Prayer Books’, in EJ, 2nd ed., vol. 16 (Detroit: Macmillan Reference USA, 2007), 460).

Most scholars understand ‘minhag bene Roma', מנהג איטאליאני ( 'minhag Iṭalyani'), and מנהג לועזים (‘minhag Loʻazim’ )as interchangeable terms, which were used to designate mostly the same set of prayers and practices since medieval times (see on this Ernst Daniel Goldschmidt, ‘The Rite of the Roman Jews’ [in Heb.], in Samuel David Luzzatto, Mavo le-maḥzor minhag bene Roma 1856 (Tel Aviv  726 [1966]), 79–102).

'Geʾulah' by Avraham ibn ʿEzra (1089-1164) (folios 241v[=234v]–242v[=235v]):"אל ישראל נקראת לפנים" (Davidson, Otsar ha-Shirah, vol. 1 (New York 1924), 173, no. 3735). "מלכי עד מתי תראה צרותי". 'Geʾulah' by R. Maimon (folios 242v[=235v]– 243r[=236r]): "מלכי עד מתי תראה צרותי" (Davidson, Otsar ha-Shirah, vol. 3 (New York 1924), 149, no. 1739).

State of text: Very fine, formerly white, parchment, most likely vellum; hair and flesh sides are still distinguishable. Heavy staining indicates severe water damage in the past; spotting and discolouration of the inner part of the leaves due to now inactive mould. Some rodent and pest damage mostly without loss of text. Heavy ink corrosion in some places but text is mostly still readable; ink on 243v[=236v] appears to be bright green due to the oxidation of its possibly rather high copper content.
